Happy Remarks

What was on the wall that day.

I'm grateful that I learned how to swim. Late, but I learned.

Pulling off the highway onto a back road.

The vet stayed late with us when we put our cat down.

Carrying in groceries in one trip.

The pool at the Y. Lifeguards with whistles. Lockers that smelled like pennies. I was a child in chlorine.

I learned to swim at the Y in Worcester. The lifeguard's name was Janet. She bribed me with M&Ms.

I have my hearing aids. They give me back the kitchen sounds.

Loon call across the lake at dawn.

My uncle's truck smelled like cigarettes and Old Spice. I loved riding in it. I still smell it sometimes and look up.

My partner cried at our wedding. So did my mother. So did I.

Finishing a long phone call with a friend.

Sunlight through stained glass in an empty church.
