Happy Remarks

What was on the wall that day.

A little boy waived to the subway conductor and they smiled and waived back. That small moment made his day and mine

Saw a great gray owl perched at the gate before dawn.

My partner picked me up at the airport with a sign with my name on it.

A familiar voice on the phone.

Putting on a coat from the dryer when the house is cold.

Grateful that I can still drive. They were going to take my license. I passed the test.

Putting a record on, side A all the way through.

The school custodian leaves the lights on a little late so the kids who run cross country don't have to come home in the dark.

Carrying in groceries in one trip.

Grateful that I made it to fifty. Some of my friends didn't.

The diner waitress who called me hon when I was eight. Twenty-five years later I still go in. She still does. I'm still hon.

My partner makes my tea exactly how I like it.

My great-aunt's apartment in the Bronx. Plastic on the couches. Pictures of strangers on the wall. The same one of me at four.
