Happy Remarks

What was on the wall that day.

I'm grateful for the doctor who told me I could change my mind about the surgery, with no judgment.

My mother's school photo from 1962. Bangs. A small chipped tooth. I look at it and I see all of her at once.

A stranger told me she liked my coat. That was the only nice thing anyone said all day.

My kid told me a secret today and asked me not to tell anyone. I won't.

Grateful for the kid who carried my groceries when the bag broke. He laughed about it. I laughed too.

Stepping out of the shower into a bathroom that's still steamy.

First day of kindergarten. The teacher had her own little garden in the classroom. A real watering can. I held it like a holy thing.

My father holds my hand at the doctor's office. I'm forty-six.

Finding the perfect spot at the beach with no umbrellas around.

The moon was so close tonight I could see the seas.

Grateful for the lifeguard who pulled my son out. We never got her name. I still pray for her.

The night the power went out in '88. We played cards by candlelight. My father told stories of his uncles.
