Happy Remarks

What was on the wall that day.

Magnolia petals on the windshield.

The blue heron is back at the pond. He's the same one. I'm sure of it.

My grandmother's church hat. Wide brim. A small fake bird on the side. She wore it every Easter. I have it in a box.

The Fourth of July in our small town. The whole street pulled out lawn chairs. The fireworks were over the high school.

The summer my brother and I dug a hole in the backyard. We were sure we'd reach China. We never told mom about the hole.

Watching ducks at the pond.

The way water beads on my windshield after I wax the car.

A hawk took a pigeon off the railing. I won't lie. It was a marvel.

My husband knows when I want company and when I want to be alone in the same room.

Grateful for the way the light comes into the kitchen at four in the afternoon in November.

The boy who walked me home in seventh grade. He didn't say much. He carried my books. I think about him kindly.

My boss said, take your kids. Don't apologize. The work will wait.
